I feel old 🤣 when we ate only tinned fish in our twenties was cause we were saving our money and time for partying rather than on cooking and shopping for food, and it was fast easy food for a single person that never went off at the back of the cupboard. It wasn't a status thing, just tinned food was fast and lazy when our priorities were elsewhere (clubs/fashion/men) We also ate tins of sweetcorn with a teaspoon for fibre and baked beans. Over 10 years ago I went to a high school writing class where one of the older girls, who read her work with some gravitas and wrote with this sort of elegant lyrical prose style I could never quite muster, said she LOVED Joan Didion. So I decided I would also Love Joan Didion. I told myself I appreciated the essays in The White Album. I even made the Celine Joan Didion my phone wallpaper. Performing this for basically no one. Just seemed like the thing Smart People liked. But I was being honest, her writing wasn't that enjoyable! I decided to stop pretending a few years ago ig.
I can't help that I have "bad taste" lol. I read "On Self Respect" a few times in the past couple years, but each time I was just like GIRL GET TO THE POINT!!! WHERE'S THE NUT GRAF???
